Spondylus, also known as the spiny oyster, is a vast family of molluscs. They can also go by the names of thorny oysters orspondylids. This is a bivalve mollusc with a two-part shell that can be opened and closed. Their shells sprouted large quills, giving this exact its well-known name. Despite their name, these animals are more closely linked to scallops than oysters. There are numerous species throughout the world's oceans, but two variants can be found off the Pacific coast. Both are harvested for their shells,
which are used in lapidary and jewellery. Recent data suggests that the animal benefits from these spines' camouflage properties. For organisms like algae and sponges act as anchor points. Its shell has a crimson band running alongside. They are often found between 15 and 50 meters deep in the ocean. These molluscs are like sandy terrain in the ocean and are not necessarily linked to substrates like rocks.
Native American Indians have worn spiny oyster shells as ornaments since ancient times because they pair beautifully with turquoise. Spiny oyster shells are particularly stunning organic jewels, according to jewellery enthusiasts. The spiny oyster played numerous significant roles in the prehistoric cultures in the American Southwest, Central America, and South America. Most of these civilisations considered spondylus to have religious or ceremonial significance in addition to serving as a food source. They were also utilised as money in some societies.
