Purpurite, as the manganese-dominant (Mn) end-member of the iron-dominant (Fe) end-member heterosite, forms a mineral series. Purpurite and hetero sites have similar colors and qualities, but purpurites are significantly more common. Usakos, Namibia, produces a lot of rich, purplish masses at a moderate cost. This is where the majority of gem-quality material is found. Purpurites should not be cleaned with mechanical cleaning devices such as steam or ultrasound. Only a delicate brush, light detergent, and warm water are needed to clean these gemstones. More information on how to care for gemstone jewellery may be found in our gemstone jewellery cleaning guide.
