In stony-iron meteorites, which are now referred to as pallasites but were earlier classified as lithosiderites, the nickel-iron forms a cohesive mass that encloses distinct stony components. After the melting and differentiation of their parent asteroids, the material that makes up pallasites most likely developed at the interface between the nickel-iron metal core and the surrounding silicate mantle.
In an iron-nickel matrix are crystals of olivine that are a few centimetres long and look like peridot. When you etch metal, Widmanstatten patterns form in the rougher parts. Minor ingredients are schreibersite, troilite, chromite, pyroxenes, and phosphates (whitlockite, stanfieldite, farringtonite, and merrillite)
It was believed that pallasites originated at the core-mantle border of differentiated asteroids that impacts had subsequently broken. A recent alternate idea proposes that they are mixes of elements from the core and mantle formed by results.
