Larimar is frequently confused with blue jade or translucent turquoise, but it is such a magnificent stone that it does not require a guide to identify it. Larimar was discovered by a Spanish priest in 1916, but no mining took place. The stone was then uncovered on the seashores of Barahona by American Peace Corps volunteers in 1974. "Larissa," one of the volunteer's kids, was given the name Larimar, which was combined with the Spanish word "mar," which meansĀ "sea."
