Hypersthene gemstones are made up of magnesium and iron silicate, and they form a greenish rock. The word "hypersthene" comes from a Greek word that means "over strength," no doubt referring to its hardness when contrasted to minerals like hornblende, with which it was frequently confused. These days, "hypersthene" isn't a widely used name; instead, it's classified as enstatite or ferrosilite. Hypersthene, on the other hand, is the link between the two minerals. Enstatite has higher magnesium content, ferrosilite has a higher iron content, and hypersthene is in the middle, with about 50% iron.
