In 1994, Ethiopian precious opal began to enter the gem and jewellery market. This opal was discovered in the Menz Gishe District of Shewa Province, in the northern section of the province. This region's opal comes in a variety of body colors. The body color of most opals is brown, red, or orange, but yellow, white, and transparent opals can also be found.
