Hydrophane opals make up a large portion of the opals mined in Ethiopia, particularly in the Welo deposits. The term "hyperplane" refers to a porous opal with the ability to absorb water. Water absorption is frequently accompanied by a change in color or transparency. Because of their porosity, these opals have lower specific gravity than other types of opal. Some of these opals can absorb enough water to cause a 15 percent weight gain.
