Boulder Azurite is a common secondary mineral in Malachite, a copper carbonate mineral. Volcanic rock is frequently the host. The majority of collectors' azurite crystals come from Chessy, France (the oldest mine dating back to the mid-1800s), Morenci and Bisbee, Arizona, Tsumeb, Namibia, and Touissit, Morocco. The rising price of copper in the first decade of the twenty-first century prompted the reopening of previously known copper mines. Azurite specimens with good crystallization have lately been discovered in China, Morocco, and Mexico.
