Singapore is an important international gems and jewellery trading centre. It has been undertaking precious manufacturing also that received a boost with the migration of many manufacturers from Hong Kong when the Crown Colony was handed back to the people's Republic of China in mid-1997.
Singapore is situated at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. It comprise one main island and 54 smaller ones. For an areas of 286 sq.Kms., it has a population of more than 4.2 million. Singapore is a thriving trading centre for gems jewellery. It imports a wide variety of precious goods from many countries and besides sizeable local sales, including sales to tourists, re-exports a part thereof to may countries.
The Island State imports diamonds, colored stones, pearls, jewellery and synthetics form India, U.S.A., U.K., Belgium, Japan, Hong Kong, Israel, Brazil, China, Netherlands, Austria, etc. Diamonds is the main item of imports.
Currently, Singapore sells diamonds to the Malaysian and Indonesian markets as well as Thailand, Japan and the Philippines. Steady performance of Singapore's economy has also given a boost to diamond trading. After the economic depression of the late increase it was also hit by the SARS epidemic in 2002-2003, but has recovered and is back on the back of development.
Gems & jewellery Fairs:
The Diamond Exchange of Singapore and the Singapore Jewellers' Association jointly organize the annual Singapore Jewelry & Watch Fair for promoting international trade. A China Fair is also organized privately by a Hong Kong promoter as an international event.
Annual Jewelry Fair:
To showcase and promote further its fast jewellery growth, Korea has launched an annual International Jewelry & Watch Fair, that is held in early July at Seoul.
